Lush orchards and Mediterranean vegetation – palm trees and picturesque vine-covered hillsides contrast starkly with the backdrop of snow-mantled Dolomite peaks. Compared with South Tyrol, Italy’s northernmost province, few winegrowing regions anywhere can boast such a diversity of grape varieties and wine styles. Microclimates, range from the glacier to the searing summer heat of the central valleys, where South Tyrol’s 5,000 hectares of vineyard are located on the lower mountainsides. Vines include the heat-loving varieties such as the native red Lagrein and international vines warm-climate like Cabernet Sauvignon. Vines from the Pinot family (Pinot Blanc, Noir and Pinot Grigio) perform best at medium altitude, as does the native Gewürztraminer, while the cool climate in the Eisack and Vinschgau valleys are ideal for late-ripening aromatic white varieties. South Tyrol offers enormous variety for even the most discerning palates.
